With its bustling atmosphere, iconic skyline and endless attractions Shanghai is a metropolis of the Far East. Despite being a very modern city, it still retains some of its traditional charm with various markets and rich architectural heritage.
Located in the estuary of Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai became more important in the 19th century due to booming trade through its famous port. The city is still known today for being the cultural centre of East China as it is influential in economy, international trade and is a global finance centre.
Pudong International Airport is located 84km from the circuit in Pudong New District and welcomes both internal and international flights.
Alternatively, Shanghai is also home to Hongqiao International Airport located to the west of the city, around 13kms from the centre, however, this airport is a little smaller than Pudong.
With a plethora of modern skyscrapers, restaurants, museums and shops, there is plenty to do in Shanghai. A trip to the Bund is a must; this riverfront promenade is a designated section of Shanghai’s port on the Huang Pu River. Take a stroll and enjoy the fantastic views of Shanghai’s Pudong colonial architecture.
For those interested in history and art, there are a wide variety of museums and galleries to explore. Shanghai Museum is a free museum situated on the People’s Square, which exhibits bronze and jade artefacts as well as sculptures and paintings. The Shanghai Municipal History Museum is also nearby, which illustrates the history of the city, from the opening of the port in 1843 up to 1949.
Nature lovers will appreciate Yuyuan Garden located beside the City God Temple in the Old City of Shanghai. First built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty, the bridges, pagodas and decorative dragons offer some peace and tranquillity within the bustling city.
After soaking up all the cultural highlights Shanghai has to offer, take a trip to Nanjing Road, one of the world’s busiest shopping streets. Remember to visit the 632 metre high Shanghai Tower. At 561 metres high, the observation deck is the highest in the world, offering panoramic views across the whole city.
