Key Facts, International Travel, and Things to Do

Background World

With its bustling atmosphere, iconic skyline and endless attractions Shanghai is a metropolis of the Far East. Despite being a very modern city, it still retains some of its traditional charm with various markets and rich architectural heritage. Due to the economic and and trade potential of the city, power changed several times, with Britain, America and Japan all presenting an interest in the city. In 1949 the People's Liberation Army took control of Shanghai after years of Japanese control, to become the city we know today.

Located in the estuary of Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai became more important in the 19th century due to booming trade through its famous port. The city is still known today for being the cultural centre of East China as it is influential in economy, international trade and is a global finance centre.

Thing To Do
Things to do

With a plethora of modern skyscrapers, restaurants, museums and shops, there is plenty to do in Shanghai. Arrive to the city in style from Pudong Airport on the Maglev, the world's fastest train at 431kph. Whilst in Shanghai, a trip to The Bund is a must; this riverfront promenade is a designated section of Shanghai’s port on the Huang Pu River. Take a stroll and enjoy the fantastic views of Shanghai’s Pudong colonial architecture. Alternatively, explore The Bund by a boat or ferry cruise!

For those interested in history and art, there are a wide variety of museums and galleries to explore. Shanghai Museum is a free museum situated on the People’s Square, which exhibits over 120,000 pieces, including rare bronze and jade artefacts as well as sculptures and paintings. The Shanghai Municipal History Museum is also nearby, which illustrates the history of the city, from the opening of the port in 1843 up to 1949.

Nature lovers will appreciate Yuyuan Garden located beside the City God Temple in the Old City of Shanghai. First built in 1559, this is the only surviving garden from the Ming Dynasty. The bridges, colourful pagodas and decorative dragons offer some peace and tranquillity within the bustling city. Be sure to see the Exquisite Jade Rock, believed to be from Song Emperor Huizong's private collection.

After soaking up all the cultural highlights Shanghai has to offer, take a trip to Nanjing Road, one of the world’s busiest shopping streets. Afterwards, dine at the revolving restaurant at The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, set at 350 metres above the ground. Remember to visit the 632 metre high Shanghai Tower, the second tallest building in the world. At 546 metres high, the observation deck is the highest in the world, offering panoramic views across the whole city.

Shanghai has a humid climate, with temperatures in April averaging 20 degrees centigrade. Although Spring is considered the most pleasant season, with an average of 11 days of rain throughout April it is wise to prepare for the worst and pack some waterproof clothing!
